His father died eight months before his birth. Sometime between 1633 and 1642, his mother came to New Haven with James. She is called a widow in the records of New Haven. On November 20, 1662, in New Haven, James married Sarah Street, the daughter of Nicholas and Alice Street. James and Sarah had nine children, all born in New Haven. James died on October 16, 1712, and is buried in the Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven. The record of the death of Sarah has not been found.
