Susan (Harbaugh) Johnston, daughter of George and Anna (Snyder) Harbaugh, was married to William Johnston by Reverend George W. Glessner on 2 May 1833 in Waynesboro, Washington Township, Franklin County, Pennsylvania. She appears along with 12 siblings in "Annals of the Harbaugh Family in America" authored by her brother Rev. Henry Harbaugh. She was a granddaughter of Johann Jacob and Anna Margaretta (Schmidt) Harbaugh and a great-granddaughter of the immigrant Yost and Maria Margaretha (Klein) Herbach [anglicized to Harbaugh]. Yost was born in Switzerland, was married in 1725 in the Reformed Church of Otterberg, and brought his wife and their five eldest children to America from Kaiserslautern, Germany about 1736.

Among the eleven children of William and Susan (Harbaugh) Johnston is John Aaron Johnston, who became an elder with the Harbaugh Church and in the 1890s was largely responsible for the erection of a new church building. John and his wife, Mary Ellen Brown, lie at rest at the Harbaugh Church Cemetery as do John's parents, William and Susan Johnston. While the engraver of the church's stained glass windows erred in the spelling of the family name, the family's gravestones at Harbaugh Church Cemetery bear the correct spelling, Johnston.
