Marvin Raymond Darby was the son of George W. Darby and Maude Ashford. He was the grandson of Samuel Thomas Darby and Lucy Jane Webb, and the grandson of William Haemer Ashford and Amanda Jane Sullivan. Marvin had two brothers, Donald Russell Darby (1912-1978) and Lester Samuel Darby (1916-1982).

When Marvin was about 10 years old his mother Maude passed away. He may have continued to live with his Dad and brothers, or he may have been raised by another family member. That information is not available to this family member. In 1930, at the age of 21, Marvin was a boarder in the home of Ora C. Baker, a 60 year old divorced lady in Portland, Oregon.

In 1934 Marvin was serving as a radio operator on the ship S.S. San Felipe traveling between Astoria, Oregon and Shanghai, China.

Marvin served in the military during World War II and was stationed in Hawaii. After his military service he moved to New York where he lived until his death in 1968.
