Mildred Laschinger began her studies in nursing at the University of Toronto/Toronto General Hospital in 1915. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in 1918, receiving the Gold Medalist award in her class.

Mildred married Dr. Newton Oscar Thomas on July 15, 1919, in New Hamburg, Ontario. She was widowed ten years later when Dr. Thomas drowned in Fort William (now Thunder Bay), Ontario, where he was head of a provincial laboratory, working as a bacteriologist and and pathologist.

After her husband's death, Mildred and her six young children moved to her hometown, New Hamburg, Ontario.

Mildred and Newton were the parents of:
- Frederica Elizabeth "Betty" (Fullard)
- Margaret
- Newton Arthur
- Katharine (Lapp)
- Mildred Anne "Anne" (Reny)
- Constance "Connie" (Klassen)
