The following notes came from Grace Venable (Pollock) Brown-in the notes she made the comment that part of her information was from a typed biography by Robert J. Barker: Massena Callaway Barker, (or M. Callaway Barker, as he was known), was the third child of William Allen Barker and Sarah (Hobbs) Barker, was born April 26, 1821, at Liberty, In Giles County, Virginia. He came to Summers County in 1842, and settled first at Beach Run. Later he purchased and finally settled on the Gatliff Land, formerly owned by Anderson Pack.

M. Callaway Barker "was a man of fine business sense and noted for his love of peace, being the mediator by which many neighborly disputes were amicably settled, and enemies made into friends by reason of his good services.

He was a man of fine physique, and judgment in business and other matters…" He was Justice of the Peace in 1859, and again during the Civil War.

He was made a prisoner during the War and was taken to Beckley by the Union soldiers but after three months' imprisonment there he was released by General Hayes.

At the time of the change in the Constitutional Convention regarding the abolishing of county courts, M. Callaway Barker was president of that body, having been elected for a full term. Later he became in independent candidate for delegate to the Legislature but was defeated by the "regular" Democratic party candidate.
