The Honorable Robert J. Barker, born April 28, 1848, married Melissa Malott, his first wife in 1871. They had one one daughter, Maud O. Barker. His second wife was Elizabeth K. Palmer, daughter of Judge H. and G. Elizabeth (Utterback) Palmer. Robert J. Barker was born in the old family home near Hinton, now in West Virginia. He received an excellent education for those days. He attended the Academy at Cheshire, Ohio, where he graduated. He took special civil engineering at Hale College, graduating in 1860. He taught school at Jumping Branch, West Virginia , for ten ten years and later held the chair of Mathematics at the Normal School in Yokomo, Indiana. He entered business in Kansas and later in Jeffriesville, Missouri. He moved to Oklahoma, traveling on a lumber wagon. Robert helped survey the Oklahoma Territory and was a member of the first Legislative Of the Oklahoma Territory. He was a Republican and a member of the Christian Church. In 1891, he was appointed the first president of Agricultural and the Mechanical College. By his second wife, Robert had four children; Fred Barker , a doctor; N. Ella Barker, who married Charles P. Wilkie; and two sons who died young.

R J Barker, 93 years old, first president of the Oklahoma A and M College at Stillwater, died yesterday at the home of Mr and Mrs A G Martin, 3025 Campbell street, where he had lived for the last five years. He had been ill seven or eight years.Mr Barker was born in Hinton, West Va and was graduated from William and Mary college. About 1870 he moved to Pomeroy, Kas, where he taught school. A little later he moved to Hickman Mills, Mo, to run a general merchandise store.In 1871 he married Miss Melissa Malott. After her death in 1874, Mr Barker married Miss Bettie Palmer, who died in 1930.Mr Barker went to the Oklahoma Territory when it was opened in 1889, and in 1891 was president of the college at Stillwater, serving until 1896.Later he owned and operated a large ranch at Crescent, Ok. He moved to Kansas City in 1905 where he invested in the real estate business. He had not been active in recent years and spent most of his time in reading and writing.He leaves two daughters, Mrs Maud Stephens, 421 North Sixteenth street,, and Mrs Ella Wilkie, 1123 State avenue; a brother, Dave Barker, Merriam, Kas; two sisters, Mrs Ollie Pitman, Daniels, W Va, and Mrs Fannie Bradberry, Warfield, W Va; five grand children and a daughter-in-law, Mrs Margaret M Barker, 917 Locust street.Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Monday at the Fairweather-Werner chapel, Eighteenth street and Washington boulevard, Kansas City, Kansas.
