VILLE PLATTE - Reverend Eugene Ray Tremie, 82, retired priest of the Diocese of Lafayette died on Wednesday, August 24, 2022, at Consolata Home in New Iberia.

News of his death has been received with sadness by people throughout the Diocese. For over 51 years he served joyfully, generously, and reverently with a love for God and a love for his priestly vocation which were always evident.

The Most Reverend J. Douglas Deshotel, Bishop of the Diocese of Lafayette, will be the principal celebrant of the Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ville Platte on Tuesday, August 30, 2022, at 10:30 a.m. Reverend Mario Romero will be the homilist.

Father Gene was born on October 2, 1939, in Ville Platte, Louisiana. He attended Ville Platte High School, served in the U.S. Army for three years, graduated from Southwest Louisiana Institute (SLI) with a degree in accounting and worked for one year in Houma before entering seminary for the Diocese of Lafayette at Saint Mary Seminary in Houston.

Father Gene was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Lafayette at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ville Platte on May 29, 1971. He served as an associate pastor in the parishes of Saint Joseph in Rayne and Saint Peter in New Iberia. Afterwards, Father Gene served on the formation faculty of Immaculata Seminary in Lafayette followed by pastorates of the parishes of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in Church Point, Saint Stephen in Berwick, Saint Joseph in Rayne, Saint Landry in Opelousas, Sacred Heart and Saint Joseph in Ville Platte, and Saint Marcellus in Rynella. During his priesthood he had a number of diocesan responsibilities including that of vocation recruitment, director of various organizations, regional Dean, and advisor on a number of committees. He retired on July 1, 2015.

Father Gene is survived by his sister, Glenda Guillory of Lafayette and niece Anne Marie Guillory Talbot (Dyke) of Carencro, Jeff Guillory of Lafayette and Lisa Guillory Guidry of Pittsburg; great nieces Elizabeth and Sara; great nephews Blaine and Casey; 7 great-great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents Antoine and Adella Tremie and Noah and Ezola Veillon, parents, Anthony Tremie and Isabelle Veillon Tremie; his brother-in-law Herbert Guillory Jr., and his nephew and godchild Douglas Guillory.

Visitation will be held on Monday, August 29, 2022, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ville Platte from 5 PM until 9 PM with a vigil service (Rosary) at 7 PM led by Very Reverend Thomas Voorhies and Reverend Mitchell Guidry. Visitation will resume at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Tuesday morning, August 30, 2022 from 8 AM until the time until the time of the Funeral Mass at 10:30 AM at Sacred Heart. Father Gene will be buried with his mother at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Ville Platte.

In lieu of flowers donations may be sent to the Carmelite Monastery in Lafayette or Hospice of Acadiana.
