Wrote diary describing early Toronto and early Canadian & NY life including the War of 1812 (now located in the Ontario Archives.) See --- https://twitter.com/elyplayter1812 --- for The Archives listing Ely's War of 1812 entries. His diaries, especially of the War of 1812, are a primary documentation of the war in Canada and its impact on Toronto and the Niagara area. They are also quoted in histories of taverns, histories of baseball, and other texts.
Ely was captured and listed as a prisoner-of-war in Toronto during the war.
After the war, he served as member of Parliament of Upper Canada(Ontario).
Moved in 1826 to Niagara Co., NY, with his wife & children in mid-term of Parliment. Farmed near Pekin, NY.
Died at home of son Joel and remains were brought home to Pekin for burial next to his wife, Sophia (step-sister of Christopher W Robinson, PrimeMinister of Upper Canada).

OBIT: Death of Mr. Playter.--The death of Mr. Ely Playter deserves more than the usual notice. He came into this county about the year 1826 and settled in Pekin where he has resided nearly ever since.--Since our earliest recollection he has been prominently connected with the Methodist Church at that place and has always been known as a most upright, honorable, christian man. He was one of the few found scattered throughout society to whom neighbore and acquaintances look for sound advice and reliable counsel.
Mr Playter appeared as well as usual until Friday evening when he complained of feeling chilly and sick. He placed his foot in a warm bath and ere further aid could be summoned he quietly breathed his last. Physicians are divided in opinion as to the cause of his sudden death. Some think it was from disease of the heart, while others think it was from the bursting of a blood vessel. His remains were brought to Pekin and interred on Sunday. Thus pass away the old land-marks of society.
