FLOURNOY
By MRS. R. E. GIBSON

Mrs. R. E. Gibson was much surprised Sunday afternoon by hearing the unmistakable cry of a panther while attending to some sheep near the house. Looking up to see where the cat was located, she saw it on the hillside near where she was at work. Mrs. Gibson thinks the panther did not see her until she stood up or else was slipping up to attack her as she was kneeling down attending the sheep, as the cat was only about fifty yards from her. The panther stood quietly a short time then gave another cry and turned around looked back, then slowly followed the trail over the hill out of sight. Mrs. Gibson does not appreciate her late afternoon visitor and will try to get an experienced trapper to try and capture and destroy it.

Born in Virginia –

Mrs. Gibson was the daughter of the late George Henry and Nannie Martin Flournoy. She was born in Virginia January 20th 1866, and together with her parents, a brother, W. E. Flournoy, and sister Mary Friend Flournoy, settled on the old Flournoy estate in October, 1869, where she spent her girlhood.
She attended the old Red Bluff Academy conducted by the late Professor Crawford.

Married in 1893 –

Mrs. Gibson was married to Dr. Gibson at the ranch home of her parents on May 21, 1893, by the Rev. James Shelton, pioneer pastor of Shasta and Tehama counties.
Following the ceremony the couple left for their home in Paskenta where they lived for fourteen years. Later they moved to Kernville, Kern County, where they lived for a number of years before moving to Lost Hills, a Kern County oil field, where Dr. Gibson's services were employed by the oil companies.

Returns To Ranch in 1919 -

In 1919 Mrs. Gibson returned to the Gibson ranch where she lived until her death.
She is survived by her daughter, Mrs. Merlin Neal; the following brothers and sisters, W. E. Flournoy of Paskenta, C. E. Flournoy of Corning, Mrs. Oscar Houghton and Mrs. Frances Harbert of Corning. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and one great-great niece, the infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Omar Leslie Sutfin.
Mrs. Gibson was a charter member of the Vesper Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, in Red Bluff. She was also a member of the Christian church. Vesper Chapter will have change of tomorrow's services.
