Margie Phillips Shelton 91, Athens, OH died Aug. 5, 2022 following a brief illness. The daughter of Ollie and Violet Phillips she was born Jan. 29, 1931.

A life-long student, she attended SIU, Carbondale, IL; graduated from Sacred Heart University (psychology) and earned a master's degree at Webster University (Human relations and family counseling).

After seminary studies she and her former husband, Ray Shelton, served in Thailand as Southern Baptist Missionaries.1962-1976. While there she served several years as director of the Baptist Student Center.

After serving as counselor at Meredith Women's College, NC, she returned to Roodhouse, IL and opened her own counseling service in Jacksonville, IL. She served on the faculty and/or staff of other colleges and Universities including Columbia College, Chicago; McMurray College, Jacksonville, IL; Benedictine College and U of I Springfield, both in Springfield, IL.

Margie is survived by her three daughters; Becky Shelton (Mary Ellen Lutz, St. Louis), Penny Shelton (Bob Stewart, Athens, OH), Jana Shelton (Merriam, KS), her son, James Shelton (Atlanta, GA), and her brother, Gerald R. Phillips (Della). She also leaves 8 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and numerous other extended family. An attentive friend, she leaves a host of former mission colleagues and other dear friends worldwide.

A celebration of life program will be held on Sat, Sept. 3, 1:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Fellowship Hall in Roodhouse, IL.
