It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Harold John Sloan on October 8, 2012, at the Grace Hospital at the age of 90.
Harold was predeceased by his loving wife Phyllis (nee Simms) in 1987, and also by his parents C. Victor and Erma (nee Bergman) Sloan, his brother Clarence, daughter-in-law Margaret Sloan, sister-in-law Mona Sloan, and brother-in-law Arnold Ray Hofstetter.
He will be greatly missed by his son John, of Devon, AB, David (Pierina) of Winnipeg, daughter Carolyn of Edmonton, AB, sisters Grace (Willis) Baer and Colleen Hofstetter, both of Kitchener, ON, grandchildren David, Jonathan, Kathryn, Michael, Lucy, and Cynthia, and 8 great-grandchildren.
Harold, or "Hal" as he was known to many, was born and raised in Kitchener, ON. He met his wife, Phyllis, while working in Montreal, and they became married in Saint John, NB. Before long, they moved to Ottawa, ON where they lovingly raised their three children into their teenage years. After a brief stint in Edmonton, they eventually settled in Winnipeg.
Harold had a passion for aircraft. In his youth, one of his favorite hobbies was flying model aircraft, for which he won awards at the Canadian National Exhibition for longest flight. He later served in the Canadian Armed Forces from 1943 to 1949 as Lead Aircraftsman, and attained a degree in Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Toronto. He served as Lieutenant Commander from 1949 to 1956 on the aircraft carrier Magnificent, after which he joined the Federal Government to work on joint projects involving aircraft guidance systems.

He was very involved in the United Church with the Young Peoples group and musical productions throughout his career. After retirement, he met a lot of friends at the Refit Center for which he attended from its grand opening.
He was especially known for his intellect and sense of humour. Even recently at his 90th birthday celebration, he was able to make his family erupt into laughter for an unforgettable group photo.
