The funeral of the late Sullivan Conant, whose death has heretofore been announced in the Journal, will occur from the Second Presbyterian Church tomorrow, and undoubtedly will be largely attended. Mr. Sullivan died in his 85th year, and had been for upwards of 54 years, a respected citizen here.

He was born at Oakham, Mass., Feb. 26, 1801, and was married to Lydia R. Heminway, at Shutesburg, Mass., Sept. 10, 1822. Mrs. Conant died in this city in May, 1867. They came to the west in the autumn of 1830, and landed at Chester, Randolph county. In 1931, the winter of the celebrated deep snow, Mr. and Mrs. Conant came to Springfield, arriving here Feb. 18. They soon made friends here and throughout their entire lives had the unbounded respect and confidence of a wide circle of friends.

Their children are Abigail A., wife of Thomas Lee residing on South Fifth street; William S. Conant, a resident of Petersburg; Susan E. Daugherty, living near Dawson, this county; L. J. Conant, a merchant on North Sixth street; Mary A. Hampton, wife of C. S. Hampton of this city; Phineas H. Conant, residing on South Fifth street; Carrie A. Dillon, wife of the Rev. Thomas M. Dillon, of Perry, Ill, and Lydia J. Dinkle, wife of George J. Dinkle of Las Vegas, N. M.

Mr. Conant was a friend and promoter of every good cause. He was one of the original organizers of the Second Presbyterian church of this city, and to the day of his death was a steadfast and exemplary member of that organization. He was for many years engaged in the chair and furniture manufacturing business and did not abandon it notwithstanding his advancing age, till about 3 years ago.

He found Springfield a small town when he arrived here; he lived to see it a fine prosperous city with a great future assured to it. It was discovered yesterday that, when The State Journal was established, he was one of the first subscribers, and he had been a constant reader of it till the end of his life.

The mortal remains of Mr. Conant will be peacefully laid away tomorrow, and he will long be remembered as one of the good men who early gave character and reputation to this city.
