Charles graduated from Niagara Falls High School. During high school he was a member of several clubs and a stand-out baseball player. His talent on the field earned him a visit from Brooklyn Dodgers recruiters. Dreaming of obtaining a college degree he accepted a baseball scholarship to Michigan State, where he played first base. He later was a member of the first graduating class of NCCC.
