Martha Mitchel Guess Caughman, widow of Archie Lamar Caughman died Thursday, July 21, 2022, at the age of 102.
Martha was a daughter of the late William Samuel Sr. and Annie Lou Collins Guess of Blackville, SC. She was born September 27, 1919, in Denmark, SC.
She was a graduate of Blackville High School and attended Lander College for three years. She has been a resident of Sumter since 1945. Martha was a member Trinity United Methodist Church and the Trinity Fellowship Sunday School class. She was a teacher for 38 years in Trinity's Sunday morning nursery, nurturing many of Sumter's leaders on their many journeys to success.
In addition to looking after the family home she also managed multiple rental properties from 1960-1980. Early in her life, she was also a cancer survivor at a time when this was possible only with Gods healing hand.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Lamar Caughman in 2000 and son, Samuel Henry Caughman in 2020. Her grandson, Jon Cason Caughman passed away in 2017. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, W. S. "Buck" Guess (Arie) and Robert "Bobby" Guess; two sisters, Sara Lee Guess Gramling (Clarence) and H. Mae Guess Davis (G. W.) and a nephew, Steve Gramling.
Visitation will be held from 2 P.M. to 4 P.M. Wednesday, July 27, 2022, at the Elmore Hill McCreight Funeral Home for all of her Trinity and Sumter friends and anyone else who loved her during her long life's journey.
Graveside services will be held at 2 P.M. Thursday, July 28, 2022, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Columbia, SC with Rev. Greg Davis officiating.
Mrs. Caughman wishes to thank all of her family and friends both living and passed for a great life of loving, caring, laughing, and crying. Amedisys Hospice care was a blessing during her end-of-life journey experience. Grace and peace to all of God's children.
