Emmert Leroy Binns was born on October 8, 1924 in Mahaska County, Iowa, the son of Troy William and Alma Hazel Durham Binns.
He was raised in the Mahaska County area where he attended school. He worked on the family farm during the spring and summer and at a munitions plant during World War II in the winter. On March 17, 1946, he was united in marriage to Betty Donley at the Methodist Church in Oskaloosa. To this union twelve children were born: Sharon, Dareld, Vonnie, Alicia, Pamela, Vickie, Sandra, Kathie, Dennis, Steven, Cheryl, and Randal. The couple raised their family in Mahaska County until 1954, and Deep River for 2 years, before moving to the Knoxville area in 1957. Emmert farmed until 1967, then did factory work for a few years before starting A to Z Builders in 1974. He operated his construction business full time until his death.
Emmert passed away Friday, April 18th, 1997 at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center at the age of 72 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Kenneth.
Emmert is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Betty, and twelve children: Sharon K. Miller of Aurora, Colorado, Dareld W. Binns of West Sacramento, California, Vonnie L. Shride of Burlington, Iowa, Alicia D. Worthington of Hugoton, Kansas, Pamela J. Gritts of Pleasantville, Vickie S. Taylor of Marion, Kansas, Sandra L. Renard of Knoxville, Kathie F. Caylor of Columbia, Iowa, Dennis L. Binns of Knoxville, Steven D. Binns of Knoxville, Cheryl A. Howell of Adel, and Randal J. Binns of Oskaloosa. He also leaves to mourn his passing 2 brothers: Gayle of Knoxville and Robert of Oskaloosa, three sisters: Betty Parlet of Oskaloosa, Lois Davis of Belleville, Illinois, and Alma Louise Churchill of Newton, 31 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, and a host of other family members and friends.
