Thomas Zimmerman was born on Apr 6, 1889 in Sool, Glarus, Switzerland. Thomas was a handsome man standing 5'10” with a medium build, dark brown hair, brown eyes and a rather large nose. He came to America as a baby and celebrated his first birthday the day before the family arrived in America.

Tom's father died when he was only 6 six years old and after his mother remarried he lived in a few small towns in Minnesota before finally settling in Gary, South Dakota. In 1900 he was in Hammer Twp, Yellow Medicine Cty, Minnesota.
In 1917 he was living in Ulen, Becker Cty, Minnesota and it was while living in Becker that he reported for the WWI draft. His draft record indicates that he applied for exemption on the basis that he was “an alien” so he must not have been a US Citizen yet.

In 1920 he was recorded as living with his mother and step-father inWalworth Twp, Becker Cty, Minnesota. It is not known how or why he moved to Gary, Deuel Cty, South Dakota in just 2 short years but that is where he met his future wife, Isabell Kenyon.
Thomas married Isabell Irene Kenyon on May 22, 1922. Isabell was born on Nov 6, 1905 the daughter of Judson and Emma Kenyon (nee Wilcox). He was 33 and she was just 16 years old.

The 1920's were a prosperous time but then came the Great Depression. By 1930 jobs were scarce so Tom and Isabell were forced to move from town to town to find any kind of work so that he could care for their growing family. They mainly lived in the Dawson, Minnesota area. When Tom's mother died in 1933 he inherited the house but ironically couldn't live there because there weren't any jobs. He worked for the WPA soon after it was implemented in 1935. The WPA was part of Roosevelt's New Deal policy and was liquidated in 1943, as a result of low unemployment due to the worker shortage of World War II and very soon after this Thomas found more permanent work in the Montevideo/Maynard, Minnesota area as a machinist.
Tom was generally a very quiet man, working every day and reading the Bible every night. He was very strict with his children. Thomas and Isabell were married for 31 years and had 14 children:
