FUNERAL SERVICES FOR OLIVE THOMPSON HELD ON MONDAY AFTERNOON
The Gary community was shocked to learn of the death of Mrs. Olive
Thompson, Saturday morning, June 3. Funeral services were held
Monday afternoon, June 5, at 2:00 p.m., at the First Methodist church
at Gary. Rev. Dwight Skow conducted the service. Interment was made
in the Grandview Cemetery, at Gary. The Hardy Funeral Home of Clear
Lake, was in charge of arrangements. Casket bearers were Franz
Vander Does, Wells Cole, Perry Heaton, Sr., Fred Clarksean, Eldon
Stone and Clint Priest.
Olive Peden Thompson was born January 6th, 1896, at Lebanon, S.D. In
1905, she, with her family, moved to the farm, three miles northwest
of Gary, where her father, Eli Peden, homesteaded. She attended a
Deuel County rural school, and following graduation from Gary High
School, she taught in a rural school. She married Ray L. Thompson,
February 8, 1922, at Gary. From this union, three children were
born. The family resided on a farm near Brookings, and in 1933,
moved to Brookings. Olive Thompson returned to Gary in 1951, where
she resided until her death. She was an active member of the
Methodist church (the choir and W.S.C.S.); The American Legion
Auxiliary of Peden-Cole Post 109, and the Arbor Rebekah Lodge. She
was a former member of the American Legion Auxiliary to the Orr
Huffman Post 74, Brookings S.D. She is survived by her three
children, Luella, (Mrs. Luella Hegre) San Francisco, California;
Joyce (Mrs. Richard Dougherty) of Northville, Michigan, and son
Royal, of Gary; thirteen grandchildren, and a host of friends and
relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers,
and one grandchild.
