Well known in political and business circles, Henry W. Schick, 61 years old, died at his late home 116 S. Eighth st., yesterday morning. Mr. Schick had been ailing for four years and during that time his condition was often serious. He was not, however, confined to his bed until last week. Death was attributed to diabetes.
Mr. Schick was a native of Reading and was the son of the late Christian and Mary (nee Smith) Schick. Mr. Schick was an active business man and for over 25 years was a member of the firm of Henninger, Schick and
Hertwig, located at 819-821 Penn street. This firm has been out of existence for a number of years, but was formerly one of the largest furniture establishments in the city.
In politics Mr. Schick was a Democrat and represented the 3d ward in the school board. For 12 years he served as the school board enumerator. He was a member of the board until it was reduced to nine men.
He was one of the original members of the board of trustees of the Topton orphanage and it was through his efforts that the orphanage was erected and maintained. For a long time he was secretary of the board.
Mr. Schick was a member of St. Paul Lutheran church, and for many years was the superintendent of the Sunday school. He was closely identified with the Royal Arcanum, Mr. Penn Lodge, No. 495, and for a time was its secretary.
His wife, Fannie (nee Homan), died about eight years ago (sic), and he is survived by these children, Walter H., of Reading, Charles O., of Fort Wayne, Ind.; Francis H., of Reading; Esther L., at home; three sisters, Elizabeth, wife of John Kauffmann, Reading; Emma, wife of John G. Dersch; Margaret, wife of Frank K. Dick; one brother, William J., division superintendent of the Pennsylvania railroad, at Pottsville. There are also two grandchildren.
