Brattleboro, VT - Norman S. "Corky" Calkins. Sr.. 77, of Brattleboro. died Friday at home, following an illness. His wife of 50 years. Morene Crewe Calkins, died in 2006.
Born in Willoughby on June 16. 1932, son of Elson and Mary Calkins. he was a graduate of Brattleboro High School in 1951 . He served as a corporal in the Army during the Korean War. and was stationed over-seas in Germany.
Mr. Calkins was employed for 33 years at the Book Press in Brattleboro. retiring in 1983. In 1984 he and his wife moved to Florida, where they resided for 22 years. He returned to Brattleboro following his wife's passing three years ago.
He was a life member of the Brattleboro Post 1034 Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Brattleboro Elks. An avid sportsman, he was a fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New York Giants. He loved camping and fishing, and was an active leader in local Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.
He leaves two sons, Norman S. Calkins II of Auburndale, Fla., and John Calkins of Brattleboro; a daughter, Linda Calkins of Brattleboro; five grandchildren, Eugene Frost, Gregory Frost, Eric Frost III, Julie Calkins, and Tina Feagle; and nine great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, William Calkins, who died in 1985.
FUNERAL NOTICE: Graveside services with military honors will be Wednesday. Sept, 9, at 10 a.m. in Meeting House Hill Cemetery. There are no visiting hours at this time. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1460. Williston, VT 05495. Arrangements are under the direction of the KER WESTERLUND FUNERAL HOME.
