Eleanore Adeline Chopp (nee Smiley) passed away unexpectedly on June 19 at the age of 89 years.

She was predeceased by her husband Casey, her parents Elizabeth and John Smiley, and her brother Ted. Eleanore is lovingly remembered by her daughters Sharon (Laird), Shelley (Wayne), Deborah (Mark) and Yvonne (Frank), as well as her four grandchildren Shaun, Stephanie (Wes), Alex, and Brett (Gillian).

Eleanore was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She grew up in a hard-working family, helping out in the family restaurant, Smiley's Lunch, while she attended school. Eleanore loved to go dancing, and met Casey at a CYO dance. Casey and Eleanore married in 1957 and built a home in Charleswood, enjoying many years there with their four daughters and countless gatherings with extended family and close friends.

Eleanore went to work as a Library Clerk for the Assiniboine South School Division in 1969 in the library of Royal School. She went to school to get her Library Technician certificate and finished her 27-year career at River West Park School.

A few years after the death of her beloved husband Casey in 1986, she retired. During retirement Eleanore was a tour bus hostess and learned to paint with acrylics and watercolour which she loved. Eleanore eventually moved into a condo, where she made many good friends and shared many good times. She especially loved to travel and experienced several wonderful trips with friends, her grandson Shaun and her daughters.

Eleanore was especially proud of each of her grandchildren, and appreciated them for their own unique talents and personalities.

Eleanore was brave, funny, smart, and independent, with a kind and loving spirit – she was a survivor. Life threw many things at her, which she faced with a grace and determination beyond measure. Along with the death of Casey at too young an age, she survived many health challenges. Despite these setbacks, she remained independent, and her sense of humour carried her through.

Thank you to everyone who supported her, visited her and called Eleanore. It meant so much to her!

A Celebration of Life for friends and family will be held at 1 PM on August 17, 2022 at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St., Winnipeg.
