A convicted Nazi war criminal, he served as the German ambassador to the Court of St James's, the royal court of the United Kingdom, prior to being appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Nazi Germany, serving from 1938 to 1945. He was tried at the International Military Tribunal at Nuremberg in 1946 and convicted on four counts: crimes against peace, deliberately planning a war of aggression, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Von Ribbentrop was sentenced to death by hanging. He was cremated and the ashes were scattered in the river Isar.
