Panama Flood Kills Mother Of SAFB Man
PANAMA (AP)-The body of Virginia Parsons Lewis, a former U.S. Peace Corps worker here was recovered Friday night from the Caldera River in Boquete, western Panama, where floods caused widespread damage last week. No trace has been found of her husband, Ralph Glen Lewis, a retired American businessman. The Lewis home was one of 72 houses reported swept away by the flood waters in the highlands of Chiriqui Province. The couple was last seen Thursday when neighbors came to warn them of the flood danger. Mrs. Lewis, who was in her mid-50s, came to Panama with the Peace Corps about seven years ago. She was a native of Oklahoma. After her tour she went back to the United States and returned to marry Lewis. She had worked in the Chiriqui Province.
Surviving Mrs. Lewis are two sons by a previous marriage: Frederick, who resides in Florida, and Lynn, stationed at Shepard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Tex. The Lewises were the only casualties reported among the small American colony in the Boquete area. The unofficial death toll from the floods stands at seven with seven persons missing and from 2.000 to 3.000 homeless.
