5690 Private J Hanson, 1st Battalion the East Lancashire Regiment. The Battalion deployed to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Bavarian about 18 Jan 1900, and arrived at the Cape about 3 Feb 1900. Along with the 2nd Cheshire, 2nd South Wales Borderers, and 2nd North Staffordshire, they formed the 15th Brigade under Major General A G Wavell. They were part of the main army advance from the Modder River to Bloemfontein and Pretoria. They fought at Karee Siding on 29 Mar 1900 (5 killed and 14 wounded) and at the crossing of the Zand River on 10 May 1900. In 1901 the battalion furnished the infantry of columns which operated in the Southern Transvaal and in the Orange River Colony under Brigadier General G Hamilton, Colonel Grey, Colonel Garratt, and others, that involved a lot of very hard marching and many minor engagements. Private Hanson died of disease at Bloemfontein on 18 Jan 1901. He was buried on 19 Jan 1901. He is also commemorated on the Clitheroe Boer War memorial in the Garden of Remembrance, Clitheroe Castle, Castle Gate, Clitheroe, Lancashire, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/220966).

He is not commemorated on the East Lancashire Regiment Boer War memorial in St Peter's Church, 42 Church Street, Burnley, Lancashire, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/271401).

Burial recorded twice, on 18 and 19 Jan 1901 in graves 941 and 945.
