The Monitor-Herald, Apr. 28, 1960-
Mr. Jonathan David Blue, age 91, a native of Calhoun County, passed away at his home in the New Liberty community, on Sunday, April 24, 1960, following an illness of several weeks.
Mr. Blue was well known and highly regarded by Calhoun County people. He celebrated his 90th birthday at the Blue Picnic Area, at New Liberty on Sunday, July 10, 1958, and a large crown of relatives and friends attended the event. He was born July 10, 1868 in the Midway community of this county, the son of Jonathan Graham Blue and Sarah Ann Clay Blue.
On Dec, 27, 1891 he was married to Annie Vanhorn. They were the parents of nine children. After his marriage, they lived in the New Liberty community, where Mr. Blue passed away, and in the same house. His wife passed away Dec. 1, 1951.
Although farming had been his main occupation, Mr. Blue was a County Road Contractor for several years, was Meridian Creek Drainage Commissioner for many years, and had served as trustee of the New Liberty School.
Mr. Blue was a quiet, agreeable and unassuming man, kind to his family and friends. He enjoyed associating with people and always made his home a place where people were welcome. He was a man of intelligence, well versed in the history and incident of Mississippi and Calhoun County. In his younger years he enjoyed fishing, hunting and outdoors sports. He has always taken an active part in the civic, educational and church affairs and in the improvement of our highways.
Mr. Blue was an honorable man--a man of truth and dignity, who lived a goodly life and was always deeply interested in his family and his many friends. His passing, though expected, brought real sadness to hundreds of Calhoun County homes.
Funeral services for Mr. Blue were held from the New Liberty Church on April 26, at 2 p.m. conduced by Dr. R. B. Patterson. The Cook Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements, and pallbearer were his grandsons, Thomas Blue, David Blue, Johnny Blue, George Blue, Jimmy Blue, Charley Blue, Harvie Ramage, and Bannie Ramage. Interment was in the New Liberty Cemetery.
He I survived by three sons, Jewett Blue, Tom Blue and Prince Blue of Vardaman; by three daughters, Mrs. Edna Watkins, Mrs. J. W. Gable and Mrs. Clinton Ramage, all of Vardaman; by 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.f
