Born in Randolph County, North Carolina where he resided as a farmer prior to enlisting in Company H (Uwharrie Boys), 38th North Carolina Infantry in Randolph County on November 4, 1861. Mustered in as Sergeant and elected 2nd Lieutenant on or about April 18, 1862. Present or accounted for until wounded at Chancellorsville, Virginia on May 3, 1863. Returned to duty in July-August, 1863. Promoted to 1st Lieutenant on July 24, 1863. Resigned on or about September 17, 1863 by reason of "being unable to undergo the fatigues of marching on account of feeble health and of a wound received in battle". Transferred to Company C, 40th Regiment N.C. Troops (3rd Regiment N. C. Artillery), with the rank of Sergeant on September 26, 1863. Present or accounted for through October 1864.

He spent over 20 years at Dorothea Dix Hospital in Raleigh, North Carolina due to epilepsy. Unfortunately they messed up his name on the grave marker.
