Information from "Soldier's Application for Pension", No. 7562, filed with the Parish of Jackson, Louisiana on December 4, 1908. Enlisted on May 5, 1862 in Jackson Parish, near Hoods' Mill, Louisiana under "Mouton's Command" in Company F, 28th Louisiana (Gray's 28th) Infantry. Regimental Commander was Colonel Henry Gray, Lieutenant Colonel William Walker, Major Thomas Pool, Company Officers - Captain Robert H. Bradford, First Lieutenant M. H. Hearn, Second Lieutenant W. S. Robinson at time of enlistment and Thomas Pool, Lieutenant Colonel Melton, Major Cheathem, Captain Robert H. Bradford at time of surrender. John Franklin Carroll was not wounded during the war. Health was injured from exposure and diseases which infested our ranks while in service. John Franklin was not discharged from the service but served from time of enlistment until surrender at the end of the war. At the time of surrender, was located in Mansfield, Louisiana. Did not take the oath of allegiance to the United States Government at any time during the war. Was a resident of the State of Louisiana since 1856, except for six years in the State of Texas from 1870 to 1876. Two comrades during the war who attested to his service were Stephen M. Hearn of Chatham, Louisiana and Samuel D. Kennedy of Brooklyn, Louisiana.
