David Allen Long, M.D. -- June 8, 1952 - June 8, 2022

Dr. David Allen Long, MD, passed away at his home in the presence of his loving family after a long battle with metastatic urological cancer on Wednesday, June 8, 2022. He was the son of Reverend David Laporte Long of Tyrone, PA and Veda Briggs Long of Mount Union, PA.

Dr. Long was a native of central Pennsylvania, and while growing up, lived in many small towns. He moved multiple times because his father, a Methodist minister, was transferred every 4-6 years. Dr. Long went to high school in Mechanicsburg, PA and then to undergraduate college at Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA. He went on to attend and graduate from Temple University Medical School in 1978. After that, he became an intern and resident in the Family Practice program at Harrisburg Hospital and graduated in 1981. During his residency, he fell in love with Patricia Zalonis, and they married in 1980.

After working one year at the Family Practice Program in Mechanicsburg, PA as an instructor, he took a military commission in the Indian Health Service. With his wife and new baby, Justin, he worked at the Shiprock Indian Hospital in Shiprock, New Mexico for the next 2 years. When one of the original partners of the Mechanicsburg Family Practice passed away, Dr. Long was invited to rejoin the practice. He returned with his family to the Harrisburg area and practiced medicine there for 8 years. He also served as an instructor in the Family Practice Residency program of Harrisburg Hospital. In 1992, he transferred to the Family Medicine of Camp Hill office of Pinnacle Health and remained at that practice for 19 years. Dr. Long then worked at the Veterans Administration community-based outpatient clinic (CBOC) for 7 years. After retiring from the VA, he then worked part time for UPMC and fully retired at the beginning of the COVID pandemic in 2020.

During his tenure at Mechanicsburg Family Practice, he also held the office of President of the Medical Staff of Seidle Hospital in Mechanicsburg, PA and participated in numerous committees of that institution. Dr. Long was a member of the AMA and was a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice. This allowed him to become a member of the Society of Diplomates in Harrisburg, PA.

Dr. Long started fly fishing in 1982 in New Mexico and became an avid fan of the sport for the rest of his life. He taught both fly tying and fly rod making. He later became involved in destination fly fishing and would enjoy fishing and backpacking with his sons - especially in the alpine, western, United States. He and his sons had backpacked and fly fished in California, Utah and Idaho. He also did solo trips to the Grand Canyon (hiking rim to rim and back) and the Wind River Range in Wyoming. In the last 10 years of his life, he was able to enjoy saltwater fly fishing in the waters off Grand Bahama Island. He relished the challenge of stalking, hooking, and fighting the "ghost of the flats" - otherwise known as bonefish. He was a member of CVTU- Cumberland Valley Trout Unlimited - a national conservation organization.

Dr. Long is survived by his wife of 42 years, Patricia "Patty" (Zalonis) Long. He also is survived by his son, Justin Long, his daughter-in-law Dr. Sarah Callery, and their children, Poppy and Teddy Long of Camp Hill, PA. Dr. Long is also survived by his daughter, Cortney Long, currently of Germany. Dr. Long is survived by his sister, Ruth Ann Riese and brother-in-law, Richard Riese. His youngest son, Joshua Long, preceded him in death in 2012.

There will be a visitation from 9:00 to 11:00 AM Saturday, June 11 at Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg, PA.

In lieu of flowers, the family recommends that donations may be made to CVTU or the American Cancer Society or Doctors Without Borders.
