Mr. Shirley Zane Clifton, 76, of Sunbury died Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010 at Sentara Obici Hospital, Suffolk. Born Sept. 16, 1933 in Washington County, he was the son of the late Aaron Clifton and Virginia Davenport Clifton and was preceded in death by his sisters, Billie Jean Sawyer, Katie Erps and Terri Fornot. Shirley was a retired truck driver with Southgate Trucking of Norfolk, member of Teamsters Union Local 822 of Norfolk and member of Belvidere-Ryland Church of Christ. His family includes his wife, Charlotte Knight Clifton of Sunbury; daughters, Linda L. Clifton of Edenton, Shirley C. Reed of Hendersonville, and Debbie Lassiter and husband, David, of Hobbsville; sons Richard Clifton of Sunbury, Curtis Clifton and wife, Sharon, of Elizabeth City, and Barry Bevill and friend, Bambi, of Sunbury; sisters, Marlene Bunch of Hobbsville and Dot Zafar of Nags Head; brothers, Jerry Clifton of Anacoco, La., Ted Clifton of Pinhook, Va., and Vincent Clifton of Elizabeth City; eight grandchildren and three great - grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010 at 2 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell with Oliver J. Cartwright officiating. Family will receive friends on Saturday, Aug. 14, 2010 from 12:30 until 1:30 p.m. at Maitland Funeral Home, Creswell and other times at the residence in Sunbury.
