Lyle Coleman Cheek
1929-2008
Long time owner of the Famous, Inc., in Lynchburg, Lyle Coleman Cheek died Thursday morning at Bedford Memorial Hospital. Born September 7, 1929 to the late Clarence Rucker and Hettie Sims Cheek. After graduating from Bedford High School, he joined the U.S. Army. He served with 31st Infantry Regiment in the Korean Conflict and was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge. He was a well respected member of men's clothing industry. He was co-owner of Sprad's Department Store in Bedford and owner of Hyman's Department Store in Waynesboro. In 1969, he purchased The Famous, Inc. from which he retired in 2003 and was succeeded in the business by his son, Keith Cheek. Mr. Cheek was preceded in death by his son Stuart Lee Cheek. He is survived by sons, Keith Wayne and wife, Robin Rice Cheek, of Lynchburg and Clayton Lyle Cheek and Lenore Petteruti, of New York City. Gransons Gideon Preston Cheek of Lynchburg and Carson Almonte Cheek of New York. Mr Cheek's is survived by brothers, John H. Cheek (wife, Paige), Cicero T "C.T." cheek, Bobby R. Cheek (wife, Shirley), and sisters, Regina Gross (husband, Buford), and Mildred Adkins (husband, Nelson) as well as numerous nieces and newphew. Also he leaves behind his longtime care giver, Edith Goodrow, and special friend Wilma Noell. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2008 at 2 p.m. at the Hickory Grove United Methodist Church by the Reverend Steve Turner. Interment, with military honors by American Legion Post #16, will follow in Virginia Memorial park. Friends may call after 12 noon Friday and the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. at Updike Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bedford.
