William married again on 15 May 1881 to Helen Mar Atchinson, daughter of Dr. W. A. Atchinson. The had 2 children born at the Lightner ranch: 1. Wallace b. 7 Feb 1882 d. 17 Apr 1882; 2. Stella b. 27 Sep 1886 d. 31 May 1887.
William ran the Lightner ranch for his mother Jemima after the death of his father in 1867, until 1905 upon his own death. William, with his family arrived in California in 1849, traveling by wagon train. They settled in Santa Rosa where the older boys went to college. In 1855 they came to Keyesville and William went into partnership in the A. T. Lightner Co. They settled in Walker Basin in 1858. William attended Walker Basin School. He and his brother, Daniel constructed a flour mill on Basin Creek and had a flourishing business for 10 years until dry years forced closure in 1876. William and Daniel ran sheep at Allen's Camp in 1867. William had been his father's 'right hand man' and assisted him in carrying out business.
