SPRINGFIELD - Dewey H. Hughes, 86, of Springfield died Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008, at St. Joseph's Home.
Dewey was born July 8, 1921, in Springfield, the son of Holland and Ruth Hughes. He was preceded in death by both parents; a sister, Norma Jean Sorenson; and a brother, Oris Robert Hughes.
Mr. Hughes was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was an alumnus of Jacksonville College, Jacksonville, Fla., and of Western Illinois University in Macomb. He had been an English teacher in schools in Auburn and Springfield. He was a member of Jerome United Methodist Church and had been retired from the state of Illinois since 1981.
Dewey loved being retired, enjoyed woodworking, clock building and the Cozy Dog Drive In.
Surviving are two nieces, Toni (David) Hermsmeyer of Springfield and Mitzi (John) Wilson of Windsor; two nephews, Mike (Diane) Sorenson of California, and Rocky (Linda) Hughes of South Carolina; two great-nieces; eight great-nephews; two great-great-nieces; and two great-great-nephews.
Mr. Hughes has been buried at East Cemetery in Waverly. A memorial service will be conducted by the Rev. Paul Black at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, at Jerome United Methodist Church.
