Former Fort Dodge Mayor Will Patterson, 72, died this afternoon from an apparent heart attack while shoveling snow.

Police and emergency medical technicians were called to his home at 1260 N. 23rd St. shortly before 2 p.m. today.

Police Lt. Dennis Mernka was the first on the scene and found Patterson unconscious and not breathing. EMTs arrived shortly after and tried to revive the former mayor.

He was taken to Trinity Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Webster County Medical Examiner Dr. Dan Cole said Patterson, who had a history of heart disease, died of an apparent heart attack while shoveling snow.

Patterson was the mayor of Fort Dodge in 1993 and from 2002 through 2005. He also served on the City Council from 1981 through 1985, 1996 through 1997 and again from 1999 through 2001. He was also a school board member from 1990 through 1993.

William W. (Will) Patterson - 72, of Fort Dodge, died Thursday, January 17, 2008 at Trinity Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 21st at St Paul Lutheran Church with Rev. Allen Henderson officiating. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home.

Surviving is his wife Judith; son, Robert (Barney) and his wife Tracey of Fort Dodge, their children, Nick, Andy, Ben (Amy); daughters, Suzanne (Jim) Cahalan of Wheaton, IL, their children, Kate, Anne, Jim, Emily; Carol (Pat) Engelmann of West Des Moines, their children, Taylor and Macy; Sara (Paul) Poage of Portland, OR; brothers, Franklin (Verla), Richard (Patty), Robert, Rodney, David; sister, Ellen Marie (William) Casady. He was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Edna; sisters, Evelyn Spike and Darlene (Jack) McClellan; and a brother Larry.

William Warren Patterson was born July 28, 1935 in Stanhope, Iowa. He was a three sport athlete, lettering in football, wrestling, and track, and graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School in 1955. On March 9, 1957 he was united in marriage to Judith Carlson. During his senior year at school, Will worked as a plumbing apprentice at Armstrong Plumbing and then worked at Gadbury Plumbing. In 1963, he went into partnership with Harold Schweiger at Midstate Plumbing and Heating. Will remained owner until he retired in 2000.

He was a member of St Paul Lutheran Church and the Isaac Walton, was a sponsor of Ducks Unlimited, served on the Fort Dodge School Board from 1990 to 1993, served as President of the Fort Dodge Historical Foundation, supported Fort Dodge Senior High School Wrestling, served on the board of Urban Ministry, was a Fort Dodge City Council member 1981-85; 1996-97; 1999-2001; served as Mayor for the City of Fort Dodge in 1993 and again from 2002-2005; and was a volunteer coach for grade school wrestling and track.

Will enjoyed hunting and fishing, spending time with his family; especially his grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St Paul Building Fund, or Hospice of Fort Dodge.
