Maxine Archibald, 94, passed away on Saturday, May 28, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Louisville, Kentucky on February 3, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Pat and Ora McFelea.
Maxine was also preceded in death by her son, Larry Archibald, a U.S. Navy Veteran.
Maxine is survived by her children Ric Archibald and Susan Mason; her three grandchildren Christine Archibald, Angie Schnieders and Cindy Stroud, and her five great grandchildren Bradyn, Carson, Waylon, Wesley and Mackenzie. Maxine often said she had the best possible "in-law family members" with Patti, James, Mark, Cory and Clint. Maxine had three siblings, Herman, Kenneth and Ovada.
Maxine grew up in a family filled with music and she brought music to her own family. Maxine sang for weddings, funerals, political functions and she participated in the Clarksville Little Theater and the Hayswood Theater in Corydon. Maxine acted in stage plays including Calamity Jane, The Mousetrap, The Diary of Anne Frank, The Apple Tree and Aesop's Falables. She sang and played her guitar and omnichord on the WBRO Radio Show and at the Schwartz Family Restaurant.
Maxine has had many opportunities to volunteer her time and talents. As her children were going through school she was President of the PTA and volunteered in many ways. She worked with the Crawford County Chamber of Commerce, voting polls, was the Democratic Precinct Committee Woman and was a member of the Eastern Star for 50+ years. She was a member of the Marengo Garden Club, the Crawford County Fine Arts Club and the Red Hats.
Maxine has worked in several fields. She cooked at Wyandotte Caves, the Old Capitol Inn and on towboats on the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. She loved to cook a meal, set an elegant table and serve her guests in style. Maxine was also employed by the Neighborhood Youth Core, the Bureau of Census, she was a secretary at both Commercial Credit and Clayton and Lambert in Louisville. She was the sole proprietor of Maxine's Market from 1981-2017, where she employed six people, extended credit, provided free grocery deliveries, supported local functions and decorated lovely parade floats for community festivals. While owning the store she made a special effort to provide the supplies her patrons requested.
Maxine was a charter Member of the Milltown Baptist Church. She served the church with music, food preparation, cleaning, decorating, volunteering on committees, and teaching Bible School.
Maxine loved to travel and traveled extensively. She has visited South Korea, Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, all of the continental U.S., Central America, South America, several Caribbean Islands, Canada, Ireland, London, Greece, the Canary Islands and the continent of Africa–Marrakesh, to name a few.
The defining themes of Maxine's life have been church, family, music-singing-dancing, cooking, gardening, birds, cats, sewing, and dressing up; she loved fashion, jewelry and high heels.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, June 2, 2022 at 11:00 am at the Milltown Baptist Church, 605 E. Main Street, Depauw, Indiana 47115. Visitation will be on Wednesday, June 1, 2022 from 4-8 pm and after 9:00 am until time of the service at 11:00 am on Thursday, June 2, 2022, all at the church. Rev. Philo Jones will officiate the service. Interment will follow in the Milltown Cemetery.
