Lena was born to Carl "Charles" and Ida (Dunmüller) Barbanes, both from Germany. Father Charles put her and her older brother Henry (b. Dec 1888 in Los Angeles, California) up for adoption after their mother Ida died in 1894 and before he remarried in 1895. Lena was adopted from the Los Angeles Children's Society Home orphanage in October 1897 by Joseph and Rosa Yancey, who named her Lena Bernice Yancey. She was brought up on the train to the Yanceys in Bakersfield by a director of the orphanage who brought along with him several other children to be united with their new parents in various towns farther north up the San Joaquin Valley.

She was probably adopted because Joe and Rosa's 2 sons, born in 1884 and 1888, only lived for very short times.

Lena's birth parents are both at FindaGrave.com: Carl "Charles" Barbanes #237003459 and Ida (Dunmüller) Barbanes #8123244. I can't find a way to link both Lena's birth parents and adoptive parents at FindaGrave.com like I can with my genealogical application, Reunion.

I have chosen to link Lena to her adoptive parents at FaG because they were so much more a part of her life than her birth parents, since her father sent her to an orphanage after her mother died.
