Worry Over Financial Troubles Are Believed to Be Responsible
"We, the jury, find that the deceased, Patrick McCauley, came to his death by drinking carbolic acid at the Alexandra hotel, on Wedneday, October 6, during temporary insanity and despondency."
The above was the verdict returned by the coroner's jury empanelled at Harrison & Foster's undertaking parlors, on Thursday evening, to ascertain the cause of the death of McCauley, a returned soldier, who was found dead in his room at the Alexandra hotel, on Wednesday afternoon. Dr. Costello, coroner, produced at the inquest an empty acid bottle and a glass from which it was stated the young soldier drank the poison.
As five cents was all the money which could be found when the police searched the effects of the dead man, it was considered that McCauley, who suffered the loss of his right arm in France, became despondent over his financial condition, with the result that he took his life.
The chambermaid at the hotel gave evidence as also did S. G. Petley, secretary of the G.W.V.A., who stated that McCauley asked for assistance a few days before from the association. He said that McCauley's pension check for $30 arrived the day following his death.
Dr. Christie performed the autopsy.
