Hazel Elsie (Goodrich) McEwen was born on December 14, 1935 on the Goodrich family homestead, established following the 1889 Land Run, to parents Roger and Elsie (Mahnke) Goodrich.
She married Kenneth Floyd McEwen on June 21, 1953, in Guthrie, Oklahoma, and they were blessed with nearly 60 years of marriage. They settled in Meridian and had three children: Virginia, Richard, and Bruce.
Hazel was proud to serve as Postmaster in Meridian, Oklahoma and Carney, Oklahoma for more than 25 years. After retirement from the U.S. Postal Service, she worked for about 10 years for ConocoPhillips. In addition to her work outside of the home, Hazel worked late into the evenings and weekends in her large garden and enjoyed sharing the fruits of that labor with all of her family and friends.
Hazel was very involved in her community and the Church of Christ throughout her life: typing and sending out the church bulletins; quilting and sewing bibs for nursing homes and bandages to send to foreign impoverished countries; organizing school reunions; cooking for any and all events; and sending out cards of encouragement to everyone she loved are just a few of the many examples of her service.
She was a proud member of the Guthrie High School Class of 1953 and maintained lifelong friendships with her classmates. She loved children dearly and enjoyed attending local events such as kindergarten graduations and ball games to cheer them on.
Hazel and Kenneth loved to travel around the United States and enjoyed taking their children, grandchildren, and close friends with them to see the beauty and history across the country.
Hazel is survived by her son, Richard McEwen and wife, Alice of Edmond, Oklahoma; grandson, Jeremy Shreffler and wife Karina, of Sand Springs, Oklahoma; grandson, Cory Shreffler and wife, Mary of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; grandson, Jacob McEwen and wife, Meaghan of Midwest City, Oklahoma; great-grandchildren, Clara, Adam, and Elyse Shreffler of Sand Springs and Mallory Shreffler of Oklahoma City; and son-in-law David Shreffler of Guthrie. She is also survived by sister-in-law, Marvel Goodrich of Noble, Oklahoma; and two nieces, Brenda Nivens and husband, Gary of Coyle, Oklahoma and Marlene Stangl and husband, Joe of Guthrie.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband; youngest son, Bruce; daughter, Virginia Shreffler; and brothers, David and Floyd Goodrich.
