Claude was the 8th, of thirteen children born to William Lloyd Vanover and Malinda Vinetta Jane (Aldridge) Vanover. He married Goldie Rice, daughter of Sherman L. Rice, Sr. and Bertha (Whitten) Rice, on March 31, 1922 In Prestonsburg, Kentucky. Claude was 26, and Goldie just 15.

Tragically, Claude died just 6 months later from Typhoid Fever, and did not get to witness the birth of his only son, Claude Eli Vanover, born Feb. 21, 1923. His older brother, Mont, was the informant on his death certificate.

Claude was employed as a Coal Miner. In the south, middle names were often used as first names. According to his WW I Draft Registration Card, Claude had blue eyes and brown hair.
