He was the son of Philip Lee and Olive Boone Anthony, making him both a descendant of Daniel Boone, and of the Lee family of Virginia. His mother died when he was three. Sometime after her death, he went to live with his grandmother, Mary Jaqueline Smith Lee Anthony, in Lauderdale County, Tennessee.

Mr. Anthony moved back to Arkansas, where he worked as a surveyor, a merchant, a bridge carpenter, and as the postmaster of Humphrey, Arkansas.
