HARRINGTON - Paul Stubbs of Harrington went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, in Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital, due to heart failure. He was 84. He was born in Petersburg to the late William H. and Eliza Stubbs.
Mr. Stubbs served his country proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was in the 424th Infantry Regiment and served seven months overseas as a scout. After returning to the U.S., he became a motor sergeant in charge of a motor pool of 20 vehicles. Upon discharge, he was awarded the American Service Medal, EAME Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
Mr. Stubbs worked for Penn Supreme Dairies for 20 years. After leaving Penn Supreme, he worked for the Lake Forest School District at W.T. Chipman School for 15 years, until his retirement in 1986.
Mr. Stubbs was an avid gardener. He grew enough vegetables to feed his entire family and the whole neighborhood. He kept his yard neat and meticulous and had a rose garden that, along with his yard and vegetable garden, were the envy of all the neighbors and town.
Mr. Stubbs enjoyed fox and rabbit hunting and had two very special hunting dogs, Meatball, an old fox hound, and Jake, a beagle.
He was very family oriented and enjoyed hosting many family picnics.
While his children were growing up, he took them to Tall Chester Amusement Park twice a month during the summer time to enjoy a day on the rides. Oftentimes, with many of the extended family members going as well, there were over 30 people making the trip.
Mr. Stubbs enjoyed playing softball for the Harrington Moose Lodge. He was instrumental in creating and starting the ball fields at the Moose Lodge today.
He was a member of Manship Chapel, lifetime member of the Harrington Fire Co., American Legion, 51-year member of the Harrington Moose Lodge 534, and the Fox Hunters Association.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, William, Edgar, Emil and Nelson Stubbs; and a sister, Nancy Johnson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Mary R. Stubbs of Harrington; daughter, Sue Nolan of Richmond, Va.; sisters, Ruth James of Georgetown and (Reba) Louise Stubbs of Milford; four step grandchildren, Pete Nolan, Mark Collins, Stephanie Senogles and Dawn Collins; and seven step great-grandchildren, Caroline Nolan, Matt Nolan, MacKenzie Senogles, Margan Senogles, Meriah Senogles, John Henry Vonderlehr and Kimberly Vonderlehr.
