Helen was the 8th of 11 children reared on the family farm of Dresden, Decatur County, Kansas. She attended grade school and high school in Leoville, KS and continued her education at St. Joseph's Nursing School in Concordia, KS. Helen worked throughout her life as a nurse in Kansas, Arizona, New Mexico, Alaska, and Colorado.
On October 1, 1951, she married Alvin R. Kruse at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Leoville, KS. They lived in Oakley, Jennings and Hoxie, Kansas before moving to Colorado in 1955 where they would live the rest of their lives. Seven children were born to their union.
Helen worked in many hospitals and nursing facilities while Alvin continued custom harvesting, farming, and building homes. Their children attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Littleton, Colorado. In 1974 the family moved to their new home near Brighton, CO and they resumed farming and harvesting on a full-time basis, Helen continued her nursing profession.
She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, the Box Elder Club, The Green Valley Grange, and the Colorado Nursing Association. She enjoyed traveling to the Holy Land, Italy, Germany, China, and Mexico. In her later years she enjoyed watching the Rockies baseball and Broncos football teams. She continued to host family gatherings on holidays at the farm but also enjoyed all the activities sponsored at St. Andrews Village in Aurora, CO, where she lived for many years.
Alvin preceded her death on March 10, 2003, and her beautiful daughter, Linda Kay Tollensdorf preceded her on July 25, 2011. In addition, she was preceded by her parents, 4 brothers, Rev Paul, Phillip, Ben, Joe and 6 sisters, Sister Floreda Meitl, Wilma Wallsmith, Juliana Knopp, Rosalia Stephens, Rita Martin and Anna Cole.
Surviviors include three sons, three daughters, 5 grandchildren, great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
