US Senator, US Congressman, US Ambassador. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Texas in the United States Senate (1993). He served Texas's 21st Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1975 until 1979. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Methodist University and a Master of Arts from Duke University. He went on to receive his doctorate in English Literature from Merton College at the University of Oxford in England. He served as a professor of English Literature at Duke University, prior to entering the political arena when he succeeded longtime Congressman Ovie Clark Fisher. From 1979 until 1981, he served as Ambassador at Large and Coordinator for Mexican Affairs. After this experience, he spent more than a decade as a businessman and also held various positions as an educator. In 1990, Krueger won statewide office by winning election to a seat on the three-member Texas Railroad Commission, defeating the Republican nominee, former U.S Congressman Beau Boulter by a margin of 56% to 40% and took office in January 1991 serving from 1991 until February 10, 1993 when then-Texas Governor Ann Richards appointed him to the vacant U.S. Senate seat when he succeeded Lloyd Bentsen in the United States Senate when Bentsen was appointed United States Secretary of Treasury. Krueger was unsuccessful in election for his own term. He was appointed by President Clinton to serve as US Ambassador to Burundi in 1994 and remained at that capacity until he survived an assassination attempt when his motorcade came under attack. In 1996, he was appointed to serve as US Ambassador to Botswana and remained in that capacity until 1999. After leaving his ambassadorship, he returned to teaching and served on various boards.
