DEATH OF OLDEST RESIDENT

"Uncle" Solomon Evans, died at the home of his daughter Mrs. C. Cochran, near Oak Dale, last Wednesday night after an illness of several weeks. Mr. Evans was the oldest person in Shelby county, having been born Worcester Co., ?? on July 20, 1811 and was 96 years 1 month and 21 days old.
He came to this county in 1838. At the age of 19 he went to sea and had crossed the ocean a number of times. He crossed the plains to California in 1850 and returned to Missouri in 1852. Deceased had accumulated considerable wealth and left an estate valued at $8,000 or $10,000. He leaves one son and five daughters and twenty grand-children and thirty-four great-grand-children. His wife died in 1901. The children are: Mrs. Dr. Sparrow, of Hannibal, Mrs. Wm Glahn, Mrs. J. D. Duncan, Mrs. Craigmyle, Mrs. C. Cochran and J.N. Evans, all of this county. His funeral services were held last Friday and were conducted by Rev. T. Penn, of Monroe City and Rev. White of this city.
