Aaron Van Pelt, a veteran of the Civil War, died in the Soldiers' Home at Kearny on December 23, and the remains were brought to Matawan, where the funeral services were held and interment made in the Mt. Pleasant Burying Yard.
Mr. Van Pelt is almost a lifetime resident of Matawan Township. Forty-five years ago he operated a stage line in partnership with his brother between Freneau and the Keyport boat, at which time all travel to New York from this part of the country was by way of Keyport. In those days there was a stage line running between Freehold and Keyport and Sidney Smith's line from Matawan to Keyport, so that there were ample accommodations for the daily travel to and from the big city.
