The Chortitza Headstone Project and the Memorial site on Chortitza Island (Ukraine)
"Out of the darkness and into the light"

In 1789, the first Mennonites formed the Chortitza Colony on the territory of present-day Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine on the Dnieper River.
The Chortitza (Khortytsia) Mennonite Church Cemetery was in the village of Chortitza.
The village of Chortitza is gone… now part of the suburbs of the city of Zaporizhzhia.
In the summer of 2019, local archaeologists began excavations to find the tombstones that were taken from the destroyed cemetery and which had been used in the foundation of an abandoned Soviet warehouse approximately 700 metres from it. So far, nearly 300 gravestones have been unearthed. These were taken to the Khortitza National Reserve (KNR) on Chortitza Island and restored under the "Chortitza Headstone Project".
More than 150 fragments or stones have been identified and included here in Find A Grave.
Due to the War in Ukraine (Feb 2022), the stones have been placed in storage and will be on display in the future.
