George Henry Allen, 92 of Stuarts Draft Va. passed peacefully in his home surrounded by loved ones Sunday March 13, 2022. He was preceded in death by his wife, Eloise Ramsey Allen, his parents, 3 brothers and 4 sisters. He is survived by 3 daughters, Brenda (Chris) Sistrom of Gainesville Florida, Becky Allen of Goochland, and Holly Allen of Stuarts Draft, grandchildren Peter (Mandy) Sistrom of Eugene Oregon and Elijah Allen-Straton of Stuarts Draft, as well as 1 great-grandson, Auden Sistrom.
George was born in Montebello, Virginia. He lived in Bedford and Greenville before settling in Stuarts Draft to raise his family. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. His first job, with the Forestry Service, was keeping watch for fires from the Bald Mountain Tower Site. Although he only had an 8th grade education from the Mill Creek School, he later graduated from the Dunsmore Business College with an accounting degree. He worked for Crompton-Shenandoah starting as a custodian and leaving as the head of payroll and cost accounting for Crompton Richmond Inc. He also worked for Waynesboro Nurseries before retirement.
George was a deacon and a member of the choir in Vesuvius and Stuarts Draft Baptist churches. He had a deep and abiding faith. He was often called upon to give a blessing whenever family and friends gathered.
He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, and hiking. He had an exceptional sense of direction and a passionate love for the land. His knowledge of the mountains and rivers was extensive and he exuberantly shared with anyone who had an interest. George's love and respect for nature was instilled in his 3 girls as well as nieces, nephews, and grandsons.
A musician from the age of 7, George played almost anything with strings on it. Fiddle was his first love and bluegrass was his passion. He was a championship fiddler. He started playing music with his father L.G. (Pug) Allen and his sisters Agnes and Irene. They traveled around Virginia in the 1930's playing fairs, dancehalls, and radio shows. In 1963 George joined the Versatile Keys, out of Staunton, Virginia, and played country music every Friday and Saturday night for decades. Later in life he helped host a well-attended bluegrass jam on Tuesday nights for many years. Music has always been a great source of joy and a creative outlet, enriching his life and the lives of many others. In addition to playing music, he was a teacher and a luthier.
George was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was loved by his nieces and nephews. A good friend and neighbor…George will be sorely missed and fondly remembered.
A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, June 12th at the shelter area of Coyner Springs Park in Waynesboro, from 2-5 p.m. Please bring what you want to drink, a dish to share, and if you play music, bring your instrument.
