Charles Kingsbery was born on March 12, 1812, in Derby, Vermont, the son of Charles and Persis (Stewart) Kingsbery. He and several of his brothers moved from Vermont to Carroll County, Georgia, in the 1830s. There was a "gold rush" going on in that area, and many prospectors and settlers were moving in. Each of the Kingsbery brothers opened a general store in a nearby town to provide goods to the newcomers, and they all prospered.
Charles married Sarah Ann Williams on September 9, 1841, in Newnan, Coweta County, Georgia, and they had eight children during their marriage, three sons and five daughters.
Charles owned a store in Carrollton, the county seat of Carroll County, but the family lived several miles west in the small town of Bowdon, Georgia. His two older sons fought for the Confederacy, and the family was ruined financially by the War.
