While attempting to arrest a blacksmith known as J, C.Freeman, Saturday evening about 6:30 o'clock town marshall, Christoher C.Chennault was shot and instantly killed by Freeman.
During the day Freeman and Hartan Bagby1 also a blacksmith had had some trouble about some tools which Bagby had in his shop and which Freeman refused to let him take away. Twice during the day Freeman had cursed and abused Bagby, if he bothered him, Freeman, about the tools. The blacksmith shop is situated in the north end of Rayvi1le,and there are several occupied residences quite near. Bagby lived with Bob Wynn just across the street.
And it was for cursing and using obscene language in the street and in the presence of ladies that Freeman was to be arrested. There are two wide double doors on both the north and south sides of the shop. Bagby and Bob Wynn were with the Marshall Chennault. As Chennault and Bagby approached the shop the south doors were closed; when they got within a few feet.Chennault called to Freeman and told him to come out, that he wanted to speak to him. Freeman asked who it was and when Chennault told him. Freeman opened the door, as the marshall went to step in Freeman snatched up a Winchester pump and fired. The distance was only a few feet,and the whole load of buck shotstruck Chennault in the lower part of the throat. The neck bone was shattered and death instantaneous. So quickly and so unexpectedly was the assault made that although Chennault had his pistol in his bosom, where he carried it when without his coat, every button of his shirt was still fastened, this going to prove that he had no time to even make an effort to defend himself. When Chennault fell dead Bagby and Wynn began to get away as fast as possible. As Wynn started around a buggy he slipped and partly fell, at that instant Freeman fired at him, the load of shot passing over Wynn's bent body. The slip saved him from being killed.
Freeman then went out the north door to shoot Bagby, who was running to Wynn's house, where he lived, just across the street. He fired at Freeman several times with a pistol but missed. As he entered the door and was going through the hall Freeman fired twice putting the two loads into the wall and door facing. These shots passed through the walls and would have struck one of Wynn's ch1ldren directly in line; had not Bagby snatched it up as he ran through. When Freeman got back into the shop Mr. Balfour had arrived and he asked Freeman who killed Chennault; Freeman replied, I killed him. Mr. Balfour was unarmed and could do nothing. Freeman then started toward and up the N. 0. & W. R. R. tracks. By this time E. S. Stewart, Lem Scott, and C. W. Hunt came up, Hunt had a gun but Freeman got the drop on him and made him turn it loose.

Abell jumped on somebodys horse and rushed back to get his rifle. Before he could get away from the office, Sheriff Traylor who had been notified at home galloped and aske4 for his pistol, but when he learned the real thing he got his shotgun and started, all the other men in town were running over each other trying to borrow a shotgun or rifle. When Sheriff Traylor located Freeman he had given up his gun to Stewart and Scott. He was at once hurried to jail.
