John A. Beller, 92, prominent Woodruff businessman and a former Ironwood businessman, died March 4th at Lakeland Memorial Hospital, Woodruff, Wisconsin. He was born January 17, 1878 in Czechoslovakia. He was married May 4, 1903 to Margaret Markovitz of Ironwood by the Rev. Fabian Pawlar of Ironwood at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Mrs. Beller died June 20, 1959 in Woodruff.

John operated his own grocery and butcher shop in Ironwood until 1917 when he moved to Woodruff, where he established the Palace Market on Main Street, which he operated until 1948. He then turned the business over to his sons and they operated in the same location until 1957 when they built Beller's Supermarket in its present location on Highway 51.

In 1948 John opened The Hub Liquor Store, which now is being operated by a daughter, Margaret G. Beller.

John Beller was the founder of Holy Trinity Catholic Parish, Ironwood, and Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Parish, Woodruff. He was also a member of the National Slovak Society.

Seven of the Bellers' nine children are still living. They are the Reverend Frederick Beller O.S.B. Pryor of St. Precopius Abbey, Lisle, Illinois, John Jr., Frank, Clarence, Rudolph and Margaret Beller, all of woodruff, and Mrs. Ray Aldrich, Havasu City, Arizona. Also surviving are seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and a brother Joseph of Youngstown, Ohio.

Bolger Funeral Home, Woodruff, will be open for visitation after 4 pm Friday, with the Rosary being recited at 7:30 Friday night. A Requiem High Mass will take place Saturday at 10 AM at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Catholic Church, Woodruff, Wisconsin. Conducting the rites will be the Rev. Frederick Beller O.S.B., assisted by the Rev. Joseph Beller, Youngstown, Ohio, nephew of the deceased, and the Rev. William Green, Pastor of the local church.

The deceased will then be taken to the McKevitt-Kershner Funeral Home, Ironwood, where friends may call after 3 pm Sunday. The Rosary will be recited there at 7:30 pm Sunday night. A second Funeral Mass will be held Monday at 10 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Ironwood. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Ironwood.

Those who wish, may contribute to a memorial fund established at Our Lady Queen of the Universe Church, Woodruff.
