A private family memorial service has been held for Frances Porter, who died at her Meridian home on Tuesday, January 8, 2008.

Frances was born in Lowell, Massachusetts on November 17, 1927, to Irene Bernier Carroll and Charles Francis Carroll, a Catholic family. Her body has been given to the University of Mississippi Medical School.

As has been said of other, there was a lot of "snap, crackle, and pop" in Frances. She worked while her husband attended college, taught kindergarten at St. Patricks Catholic School, was an accomplished bridge player, earning life master status early in life. She had friends in all walks of life and of all races. She was computer literate and kept abreast of current affairs.

The call of the sea was strong in Frances and she enjoyed many years of casual beach living. She will be missed by her neighbors in the Parasol East Enclave and the girls at the Winn-Dixie on Perdido Key.

She is survived by her husband, Mark; her daughter, Maureen Burnside and her husband, Andy of Collinsville; her son, Charles and his wife, Kathy of Ridgeland; and her son, Mark, Jr., of Meridian; granddaughters, Jana Porter of Gulf Shores, Alabama and Megan Walters of Meridian; grandsons, Michael Walters of Meridian and Mark M. Porter, III of Mobile, Alabama; and a brother, Charles Carroll of Twentynine Palms, California. She is also survived by a very special friend, Virginia Hughey of Athens, Alabama. THe two of them filled their presence with laughter for a long time.

The family extends their thanks to the many doctors and nurses who cared for Frances during her final illness, especially, Doctors Touchstone, Clay, Anderson, and Pearson; Harpers Hospice and nurses Carrie Porter and John Harper.

Memorials may be made to the donors charity of choice.

The family invites friends to visit their Meridian home at 4:00pm today.
