Jacob Conrad was born in 14 Sept 1832 (per Family Bible) in Pennsylvania to John Conrad (1799 – 1869) and Elizabeth "Eliza" Lasure (1807 – 1880), who was the mother of around 10 children. This family is documented in the "Clay, Ray, Carroll, Chariton and Linn Counties, Missouri, Biographies Index, 1806-1870." It appears the family moved to Chariton County, Missouri around 1840 (the biography says around 1845; the 1850 US Census suggests they arrived 1840 based on childrens' birth locations and year). Most likely other family members were moving there as well given the number of "Conrads" in the area and the growth of the county.

Jacob married Martha "Patsy" Andrews (1837 – 1911) in about 1855 in Chariton County, Missouri. The family had 15 children per the Family Bible as well as newspaper reports of Patsy's death. At the time of her death 5 were living. It appears that Jacob worked as a farmer and served in the US Civil War Union Army during the early to mid-1860s. Based on Civil War records he may have been in service with C. 1. Prov. En. Mo. Mil.; B. 46. En. Mo. Mil; and as a Corporal in an Independent Company under Captain Vance (1864).

Based on the 1890 Veterans Schedules, he likely died sometime before July 1890 with his widow listed as "Patsy" in Missouri Township, Chariton County (1890). We assume that Jacob was laid to rest in a family cemetery. In the day, evidently, there was a Conrad Family cemetery in Missouri Township, however, based on reports that graveyard is defunct. Most likely it was eroded and swept away due to various Missouri River floods in the area and farmers plowing under fields and remnants. This is before the river was properly aligned by the Missouri Corp of Engineers. My cousins believe that they had visited this cemetery at one point and saw headstones buried in the river muck near the old riverbanks and flooded area. For convenience, we have used the Ballenger-Conrad Family Cemetery as the burial reference. (Of interest, the newspaper death description for his wife notes the "family cemetery".)
